Tips on Cooling Your Home in the Summer
Believe it or not, Summer is almost here, and it’s time to prepare for the warmer weather. Your home can be very uncomfortable when the mercury rises about 90 degrees. Keeping cool is not only about comfort your safety also depends on being able to cool off during times of extreme temperatures. Your home should be a place where you can enjoy activities with your family, but you will not be able to enjoy much without planning on how to cool your living space. The following tips will help.
Install insulation. Sometimes people forget that insulation isn’t only used to keep warm. Insulation is an effective energy saving solution in the Summer months too. Properly insulating your home will lower your warm weather electric bills just as it does in the Winter. During the summer, warm air moves from outside your home to the inside, but insulating ceilings, walls, and floors will decrease the need for air conditioning by creating effective resistance to the heat flow.

Install a whole house fan. Whole house fans pill air in from open windows and exhaust ducts through the roof. The fans provide attic ventilation and cool the whole home. Using a whole house fan along with air conditioners will lessen the wear on your air conditioning appliance and keep your home at a more regular temperature.
Protect North and West facing windows. Shade your windows with awnings or trees outside your home and quality curtains or blinds inside. If you can’t plant trees outside the windows or awnings aren’t the look you are going for you could put a reflective film on the glass.
Turn off heat sources. On extremely hot days make sure you don’t plan on baking or using the oven. Eat cool food or use the microwave to heat you foods. Switch lights from conventional bulbs to compact fluorescents or LEDs. Make sure to turn off your lamps, TVs, computers and other large appliances when you are not using them.
Putting these tips into action will help keep your home and family cool during hot summer months. If you would like help installing any of these items or putting a Summer cooling plan into action, please contact us at (303) 227-1000.
